Dr Ben Parkinson is a fellowship-trained Australian Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in hip and knee surgery. He has earned a reputation for providing expert care in joint preservation and reconstruction, supported by his advanced international training and a commitment to research-led practice.
Raised on a cattle station in remote Northwestern Queensland and later in Longreach, Dr Parkinson’s regional upbringing has fostered a deep commitment to serving northern communities. He graduated from James Cook University in Townsville in 2005, completed specialist orthopaedic training through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2012, and pursued further sub-specialist training in England and Switzerland.
Dr Parkinson employs innovative techniques in hip and knee replacement surgery, utilising advanced robotic and three-dimensional planning technology to optimise his patient outcomes. His arthroplasty practice offers the latest developments in ceramic hip resurfacing and partial knee replacement. He also has extensive experience in knee preservation techniques aimed at delaying or avoiding joint replacement, including complex ligament reconstructions, cartilage restoration, meniscal transplantation, and osteotomies for alignment correction.
Dr Parkinson’s commitment to clinical excellence and his dedication to mentoring the next generation of medical professionals are reflected in his roles at Cairns Hospital and James Cook University, where he serves as the director of orthopaedic training and an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine. He is a strong advocate for evidence-based practice and contributes regularly to peer-reviewed journals, whilst sharing his research at national and international orthopaedic conferences.
Outside the operating theatre, Dr Parkinson enjoys mountain biking and spending time outdoors with his young family in Far North Queensland.
