DR KIRA JAMES

Sport & Exercise Physician

Dr Kira James is a Sport and Exercise Physician who has completed her FACSEP Sport & Exercise Medicine speciality training and settled in Cairns after working across Australia in Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin and Alice Springs. Kira consults from the rooms at Cairns Orthopaedic Clinic. A referral is required to see Dr James.

Whilst Sport & Exercise Medicine is not just about working with ‘athletes’, Kira has worked with many high-level sporting teams and most recently, was the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the 2022 Australian Winter Paralympic team, taking her all the way to Beijing in -15C temps at the bottom of the Snowboard Events.  She is also a Team Doctor for the Australian Swim Team with tours to World and Pan Pacific Championships and has toured internationally with the Australian Men’s Water Polo Team and the Young Matilda’s Football team for a number of years.  Kira is also a published author in Concussion Assessment & Management.


Kira loves regional life and travelling, both in Australia and across the world.  She is keen to participate in all forms of sports and exercise, from running and hiking, to fishing and winter sports.  Her husband is still trying to get her on the bike – this remains a work in progress.  Kira loves learning about new sports and forms of exercise through her patients, is in awe of many of her patients and their own active achievements and is keen to get everyone back to (or start) a journey of love with exercise and feeling healthy.


DR WILL STOCKLEY

Dr Will Stockley is an accredited Sport and Exercise Physician Registrar, with strong local roots and a deep commitment to the Far North Queensland community. Dr Stockley completed his high school education, medical degree, and junior medical training locally, giving him a unique understanding of the health needs and active lifestyle of the region.

He has worked extensively across Orthopaedic and Emergency Departments in both Cairns Hospital and remote Cape communities, where he gained broad experience managing acute injuries and complex musculoskeletal conditions. These roles helped shape his strong interest in Sports and Exercise Medicine, particularly in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of sporting injuries.

Dr Stockley is passionate about preventative medicine, performance optimisation, and supporting patients of all activity levels, from elite athletes to recreational movers, through all stages of injury and recovery.

Dr Stockley is proud to live and work in Cairns and is actively involved in the local sporting community. He has worked with the Cairns Taipans NBL team, supported major endurance events including the Cairns Ironman, and will serve as Team Doctor for the Northern Pride and their six squads this year. He currently splits his time between FNQ Sports Medicine and Cairns Hospital.
